How to measure and price retaining wall work

  • Price block by wall face area (length x exposed height) and everything else by linear foot of wall.
  • Excavation cost scales with the cut behind the wall, not the wall face — measure the working bench.
  • Add an engineering allowance line whenever the wall approaches 4 ft or carries a surcharge.

Retaining walls fail from water, not weight. Inspectors look at the base, the drainage path, the reinforcement, and whether the height triggers an engineered design.

HEIGHT & PERMITTING
  • Most jurisdictions require a permit and stamped engineering for walls over 4 ft measured from the bottom of the footing
  • Any wall supporting a surcharge — driveway, pool, slope or structure above — needs engineering regardless of height
  • Terraced walls too close together behave as one tall wall; check the local spacing rule before quoting two short walls
BASE & EMBEDMENT
  • Compacted granular leveling pad, typically 6in thick and twice the block depth wide
  • Bury the first course roughly 1in for every 8in of exposed wall height, minimum one full course
  • Compact backfill in 6–8in lifts behind the wall with a plate compactor, never with the bucket
DRAINAGE & REINFORCEMENT
  • 12in of clean drainage stone behind the block with a 4in perforated pipe daylighted or tied to a drain
  • Separate the stone from native soil with filter fabric so fines do not clog the chimney drain
  • Install geogrid at the elevations and embedment lengths the design calls for — cut short grid is the top cause of bulging
