Kitchens are the most heavily coded room in a house. Most of it is electrical: how many circuits, where the receptacles go, and what has to be GFCI or AFCI protected.
- At least two 20-amp small-appliance branch circuits serving the countertop receptacles
- No point along the counter may be more than 24" from a receptacle; any counter 12" or wider needs one
- Islands and peninsulas require receptacle provision per the adopted NEC edition; dishwasher, disposal and microwave each want a dedicated circuit
- All 125V receptacles serving kitchen countertop surfaces require GFCI protection
- Recent NEC editions extend GFCI to dishwashers and other kitchen outlets within 6 ft of a sink
- Kitchen branch circuits also require AFCI protection under the current code
- Range hoods must exhaust to the outdoors when required; ducts must be smooth-wall metal with a backdraft damper
- Exhaust over 400 CFM requires makeup air in most jurisdictions
- Maintain the manufacturer's clearance between the cooktop and combustible cabinets above
- Dishwasher drain requires a high loop or an air gap to prevent backflow (IRC P2717.3)
- Seal and support countertop penetrations; provide access to shutoffs and the disposal
- Any wall or ceiling penetration through a rated garage separation must be firestopped
