How to measure and price gutters work
- Measure gutter runs by linear foot per elevation and count downspouts, inside and outside miters, and end caps.
- Price guards and underground drainage as optional upgrade lines so the client can choose.
- Add a fascia repair allowance — rotten fascia is discovered on most replacements.
Gutters building-code guide
Gutters are sized by the roof area they drain and the local rainfall intensity, and the code cares most about where the water ends up.
- 5" K-style handles roughly 5,500 sq ft of roof at 1" / hour rainfall; 6" handles about 7,960 sq ft
- Downspout rule of thumb: one 3x4 downspout per 600–800 sq ft of roof area drained
- High-intensity rainfall regions and steep roofs need larger gutter, oversized outlets or more downspouts
- Slope 1/16" per foot toward the outlet (about 1/2" per 8 ft); more than 1/4" total over a short run looks crooked
- Hidden hangers at 24" o.c. maximum, 18" in snow or ice regions; screw into solid fascia or rafter tails
- Set the gutter so the roof plane extends past the back edge — water should never run behind the gutter
- Discharge at least 5 ft from the foundation, or into an approved drainage system
- Roof drainage must not discharge onto adjacent property or onto a walking surface where it can ice over
- Gutter is not allowed to be the only roof drainage on a low-slope roof requiring secondary (overflow) drainage
- Use compatible metals — copper, aluminum and steel in contact will corrode galvanically
- Miters and end caps should be riveted and sealed, not just caulked
- Add kick-out flashing where a roof edge meets a wall, and drip edge behind the gutter back
