How to measure and price driveway work
- Take off the area in square feet, then convert to cubic yards: sq ft x thickness in feet / 27, plus 5–10% waste.
- Price excavation and haul-off separately — spoil disposal is a real cost and a common change order.
- Quote the street apron / approach as its own line; it often needs a permit and a thicker slab.
Driveway building-code guide
Driveway failures are almost always base or joint problems, not concrete problems. Here is what to check before you quote and before you pour.
- Strip organics and soft soil; compact the subgrade in lifts before placing base
- 4in of clean compacted granular fill is the practical minimum; expansive or clay soils need more
- Keep the base uniform — a soft spot under the slab shows up as a crack within the first winter
- 4in slab for cars, 5–6in where trucks, RVs or dumpsters will park
- Use 4000 psi mix with air entrainment in freeze/thaw climates
- Rebar or welded wire on chairs at mid-depth — reinforcement lying on the base does nothing
- Control joints spaced at 24–30x the slab thickness in feet (5in slab ≈ 10–12 ft), cut 1/4 of the depth within 12 hours
- Isolation joints where the slab meets the garage slab, foundation walls and the street apron
- Slope a minimum of 1/4in per foot away from the house; never trap water at the garage door

Common driveway estimating mistakes
- Quoting 4in when the client plans to park a work truck or RV on it.
- Skipping the sealer line, then absorbing it when the owner sees scaling after the first winter.
- Not accounting for access — pump or buggy costs when the truck cannot reach the pour.

Driveway estimate FAQ
What should a driveway estimate include?
A driveway estimate should include excavation and haul-off, compacted base, forming, reinforcement, the concrete volume and strength, placement and finishing, control joints, sealing, and the permit for the street apron when required.
How do you calculate concrete for a driveway?
Multiply length x width x thickness in feet, divide by 27 to get cubic yards, then add 5–10% for waste and subgrade variation. A 20x40 driveway at 5in is about 13 cubic yards with waste.
How thick should a concrete driveway be?
Four inches is typical for passenger vehicles. Go to five or six inches, with 4000 psi mix and reinforcement, where trucks, RVs or delivery vehicles will drive or park.
